Glossary Terms around the DPP

The most important technical terms about the Digital Product Passport, the ESPR regulation and sustainability — clearly explained.

D

DPP (Digital Product Passport)

Digital Product Passport - a standardized dataset with all relevant product information: materials, origin, sustainability, certificates and disposal instructions. Accessible via QR code or NFC.

E

ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation)

EU Regulation 2024/1781 - the legal framework for sustainable product design and the mandatory Digital Product Passport. Replaces the previous Ecodesign Directive.

C

Circular Economy

Economic model where resources are used, repaired and recycled for as long as possible. The DPP provides the necessary data for functioning circular systems.

G

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)

Globally unique product number (formerly EAN). Used in the DPP as a product identifier enabling unique assignment.

Q

QR Code

Two-dimensional barcode attached to packaging or products that links to the Digital Product Passport. Can be scanned with any smartphone.

S

Schema.org

Open vocabulary for structured data on the web. OpenProductData uses Schema.org/Product markup so search engines can understand and display product data.

C

Carbon Footprint

The total amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced during the entire lifecycle of a product - from raw material extraction to disposal (cradle-to-grave).

R

Repairability Score

Rating from 1-10 indicating how easily a product can be repaired. Considers factors such as disassembly, spare part availability and availability of instructions.

Recyclability

Percentage of a product that can be recycled at end of life. Depends on material composition and separability of components.

S

SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern)

Substances of very high concern under REACH regulation that must be documented in the DPP when they exceed 0.1% of product weight.

R

REACH

EU regulation for the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances. The DPP documents relevant REACH information.

G

GS1 Digital Link

Standard that links physical barcodes with digital information. Can serve as an access point for the DPP and is compatible with existing barcode infrastructure.

N

NFC (Near Field Communication)

Wireless near-field communication - enables reading DPP data by bringing a smartphone close to an NFC chip in the product. Alternative to QR code.

L

LCA (Life Cycle Assessment)

Systematic analysis of a product's environmental impact over its entire lifecycle. Basis for the carbon footprint in the DPP.

F

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

Certification for sustainable forestry. Documented in the DPP as proof of responsibly sourced wood and paper products.

C

CE Marking

Manufacturer's declaration of conformity that a product complies with applicable EU harmonization legislation. Stored in the DPP as a certificate.

D

Delegated Act

EU legislation that specifies the ESPR for certain product categories. Defines which data the DPP must contain for each category.

I

Interoperability

Ability of different DPP systems to exchange and understand data. Ensured through open standards and APIs.

E

Ecodesign

Design approach that considers environmental aspects from the product development stage. Goal: products that are durable, repairable and recyclable.

S

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

Article number for internal inventory management. Used in the DPP as an additional product identifier.
